Wil Fuentes for Clark County
For over 16 years I’ve called the Pacific Northwest my home. I’m proud to live in the Landover-Sharmel neighborhood in our county’s 3rd district. Growing up, I’ve seen the power of community to build-up those living in it; with my background in banking, nonprofit management, and land use, I know the best way to achieve results is by bringing people together to find common solutions.
We’re facing significant challenges, but with the right leadership, we can turn these challenges into opportunities. I’m running because I’m deeply connected and committed to ensuring that our region continues to thrive and prosper.
Key Issues
Housing
Housing is out of reach for many of our neighbors, and I know firsthand the anxiety that comes with housing insecurity. Through zoning reforms and by streamlining the permitting process we can meet the housing needs of everyone, across all income levels and generations. For example, moderate density re-zoning along major corridors allows for building additional dwelling units (ADU), duplexes, and triplexes. Additionally, an efficient permitting process will accelerate development and increase the number of houses available. We can achieve smart growth that balances the need for housing with the preservation of our farmland, air, and waterways.
A Beautiful Clark County
Our natural environment must be safeguarded against urban sprawl. I firmly oppose extending the urban growth area in the foreseeable future. Currently, we have ample land within the existing urban growth area to accommodate the projected population growth over the next two decades. We must prioritize smart growth methods, focusing on sustainable development practices that optimize land use and preserve our vital natural resources. By promoting moderate density housing and mixed-use developments in appropriate areas, we can support growth while ensuring future generations get to enjoy the beauty of our community.
Supporting our Neighbors
Homelessness
To support our neighbors facing homelessness, I will champion the funding of Safe Stay Communities in Clark County. These communities provide transitional housing with essential resources to help individuals and families stabilize. Mental health services, job training, and addiction treatment then create pathways out of homelessness. Alongside local non-profits and service providers, we can address the root causes of homelessness that lead to self-sufficiency for our neighbors struggling
Mental Health & Addiction
Our community deserves accessible mental health and addiction services. These services need to be timely and effective. I advocate for increased funding for mental health and addiction treatment services in our county. Additionally, I will foster partnerships with local organizations to deploy professionals trained in de-escalation, immediate needs assessment, and resource navigation. These teams will intervene in situations requiring professional support before involving law enforcement or emergency services, ensuring compassionate and appropriate responses.
A Government that Listens
A responsive local government is essential for a thriving community. Together with community leaders, stakeholders, and residents we can address our shared challenges. By spending more time engaging with residents, I will ensure that your needs and voices inform the decisions that will help everyone thrive. In addition, many Clark County employees are seeking more support and a clear vision for the future, which are essential for maintaining high morale. With my leadership experience, we can create an environment where county employees have the tools and resources to thrive.
